MANRAZE - New EP "I Surrender"

10/15/2013 - 14:08

Phil Collen's MANRAZE will release their new EP, "I Surrender," on 12 November! For all info, see the press release below

Listen to the premiere of MANRAZE's new single "I Surrender" HERE

MANRAZE, the London-based rock band formed by iconic Def Leppard lead guitarist Phil Collen, along with punk rock forerunner Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) on drums and Simon Laffy, rockin’ bass player of Collen's former glam-band, Girl, will release their new EP, I Surrender, on November 12th.

I Surrender will be comprised of three songs, including the title track, which features background vocals by Debbi Blackwell-Cook, who also appears on “All I Wanna Do”, a newly-recorded version of the song which first appeared on the trio’s 2011 sophomore album punkfunkrootsrock. The final track is “Connected-Live from Shepherd’s Bush”, a live studio performance from a studio podcast session, not previously released.

The first single, “I Surrender”, was nearly forgotten about, explains Collen, "The song is 8 years old. It practically never got finished. I was on tour last year and started singing the chorus. Early this year, I re-did the guitars to Paul's original demo drums. I did a vocal and Simon played new bass-lines. Ger McDonnell then did a brilliant edit and mix on what we gave him. Debbi Blackwell-Cook supplied the wailing outro-vocals that you hear at the end of the song. We feel this is our best song yet."

In the spring of 2011, the MANRAZE single “I, Superbiker” was the theme song for the feature documentary of the same name. Another Manraze song featuring Debbi Blackwell-Cook titled ‘Take On The World’ was also released in conjunction with the film. Directed by Mark Sloper, and released solely in the UK, the documentary is an in-depth expose’ into the merciless world of competitive speed bike racing and a look at the men who have dedicated their entire existence to this incredibly dangerous, adrenaline-fueled sport.

Since the last album release, all three band members have kept busy. Collen continues to hold down his ‘day-job’ as lead guitarist with Def Leppard, currently promoting their Def Leppard Viva! Hysteria Concert live album and dvd release this month. Cook has been working with Edwyn Collins, first on his 2013 album release 'Understated', and then touring with Collins playing live shows. Currently, Cook is also playing in Subway Sect with Vic Goddard touring and recording a new album. Laffy has taken his talents into another creative lane, having authored two novels in his ‘off-time’, Red Sunrise and Seed of Satan. Both are historical fictions, set around epic events of the 20th century and are in the process of being published.

It all started in 2004, when Phil Collen, after 20+ years as lead guitarist for Def Leppard, decided to express himself via another creative outlet. After a chance meeting on the street with Paul Cook, MANRAZE finally released their debut album SURREAL through Universal Records in the summer of 2008 to rave reviews. The group’s debut album was chocked full of rebellious in-your-face mantras (“Turn it Up”, “This Is,” “Skin Crawl”, “Running Me Up”) ranging from hardcore punk to dub. They were seen as a cross between the Foo Fighters, Green Day, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, and The Police. MANRAZE is a response to the ever changing climate of multi-faceted music and should be heralded for far more than just being a ‘rock band’.

Get an in-depth look at Phil Collen’s guitars and the songs they appear on for the album ‘VIVA! Hysteria’ HERE and read Phil's descriptions of the guitars below!

1)    WOMEN
Jackson Soloist ‘Crackle Jack’
You can hear this guitar on the intro lick of the original recording and re-record of ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’. You can see it in the videos for ‘Women’ and ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ (both versions of ‘Sugar’). I got it in ’85. It has a DiMarzio Super3 humbucker on the bridge, a Jackson sustainer combined with a DiMarzio fast track pickup on the neck position. It has an Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

2)    ROCKET
Jackson Soloist ‘Crackle Jack’
I used this for the first half of the song then when it gets all cosmic I switched out to…

Jackson PC1 ‘London 57’
My guitar tech Scotty Appleton secretly had this guitar made for my 50th birthday but I actually didn’t receive it until I was 51. It has my town and year of birth on it. It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge, a DiMarzio hs2 in the center pickup, and a Jackson sustainer in the neck position. It also has the Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo. You can hear this guitar on Manraze’s ‘Fire’ on the punkfunkrootsrock album.

3)    ANIMAL
Jackson PC1 London ‘57’

4)    LOVE BITES
Jackson Custom ‘Pearl Jackson aka Jack’
This guitar has been around the block. It’s had the neck changed a few times. It’s kind of like a PC1/Strat hybrid. It has DiMarzio cruiser pickups on the bridge and middle pickups, a Jackson sustainer on the neck pickup, and an Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

5)    POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME
Jackson Soloist ‘Crackle Jack’

6)    ARMAGEDDON IT
Jackson PC1 ‘Rootbeer’
You may have seen this guitar on a few of the Def Leppard tours. It has a gorgeous maple top that kind of looks like a tiger. All of these PC1’s have mahogany bodies. I busted the neck on this once before so this is a much fatter replacement neck. It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge, a DiMarzio hs2 in the center pickup, and a Jackson sustainer in the neck position. It also has the Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

7)    GODS OF WAR*

8)    DON’T SHOOT SHOTGUN*

9)    RUN RIOT*
Jackson PC Supreme ‘Maya’
I wanted a different sounding and different looking guitar so I gave Pablo Santana, a master guitar builder, who works at Jackson a photo of about 5 different guitars. I told him that I wanted something that looked like all of the guitars but not like any of them. Although it sounded a bit vague two weeks later Pablo asked me if I had a minute because he had something to show me. He created the first PC Supreme prototype. You may have seen it. It’s electric blue and I’ve played it with Manraze a few times on the Alice Cooper tour in 2009 and on the Def Leppard 2011 tour of England. All of my guitars have names. It makes it easier for when we’re on tour. This one got her name by a ‘fan vote’ on facebook. Maya won. The name was inspired by a Mayan pendant I was given  at the pyramids just outside Mexico City and subsequently the carving on the first fret. This guitar has a massive neck. It’s a neck through guitar whereas all of my PC1’s have bolt on necks. It’s made of koa wood with a maple top and maple finger board. It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge pickup, a combination Jackson sustainer, DiMarzio hs2 on the neck pickup, and an Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo. This is my favorite guitar.

*If you were at the shows in Vegas you may have seen me play a gorgeous red bodied guitar with the fattest neck Jackson has ever made hence the name ‘Red Neck’. Sometimes I played this instead of Maya. I also played ‘Red Neck’ in the Ded Flatbird set. However, in the film, I’m playing ‘Maya’. I substituted one for the other certain nights.

10)     HYSTERIA

11)     EXCITABLE
Jackson 30th Anniversary PC1 ‘Splatter’
When Fender/Jackson’s Mike Kotzen (artist relations) asked me if I could do anything for Jackson’s 30th anniversary this ended up being the result. I hand splashed 30 guitars and then wrote my name in white ink in Japanese on each guitar. I numbered all the guitars 1-30 in Japanese numerical symbols on the back. Since I’m colorblind everyone initially thought my color choices were a bit weird. Turns out everything worked out great. This is one of two that I kept for myself. The two that I have are not actually a part of the 30. You can hear this guitar on Manraze‘s ‘Over My Dead Body’ rhythm guitars.
There’s a DiMarzio Super3 humbucker on the bridge pickup, a Jackson sustainer as the neck pickup, and an Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

12)    LOVE AND AFFECTION
Jackson PC1 ‘Soul-Ah’
‘Love and Affection’ was to be the eighth single off the Hysteria album but it never happened. Ironically, 26 years later the live ‘Viva Hysteria’ version is burning up the airwaves cracking the top five on Classic rock radio. The original guitar I used for most of the Hysteria album was my trusty customized Fender Strat called ‘Felix’. That guitar is on display at the Fender Museum in Corona, Ca. The guitar on the live version of ‘Viva Hysteria’ is my Jackson ‘Soul-Ah’. This guitar was without a doubt my favorite guitar until the neck was broken on tour. It has since been replaced with a much fatter neck but has lost some of its soul. Thank fully Jackson’s Pablo Santana fixed the original neck and it sits in my living room awaiting its rightful place with its partner. You can hear this guitar on the solo of ‘Kings of The World’ (Def Leppard/Mirrorball). . It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge, a DiMarzio hs2 in the center pickup, and a Jackson sustainer in the neck position. It also has the Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

ENCORES

1)    ROCK OF AGES
2)    PHOTOGRAPH
Jackson PC1 Natural ‘Big Boy’
This guitar is a classic PC1. There are many pictures of me playing one of the four I own that look like this. This was latest incarnation. It has a very fat neck hence the title ‘Big Boy’. This particular guitar hasn’t made it onto records however the other three have ie, the Yeah! Album and Manraze’s punkfunkrootsrock album. It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge, a DiMarzio hs2 in the center pickup, and a Jackson sustainer in the neck position. It also has the Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo.

DED FLATBIRD SET

Jackson Custom PC1 ‘Dread’
This was the main guitar for the Ded Flatbird set. It’s pretty over the top. Underneath it’s a PC1 but with a 50 hour, glow in the dark paint job done by Johnny Rez. The guitar artwork is loosely based on the Predator and I had the classic Jackson headstock reversed just to make it different from my other guitars. It has a DiMarzio Super3 on the bridge and a Jackson sustainer in the neck position. It also has the Adam Reiver titanium loaded Floyd Rose tremolo
