It is like a Greatest Hits package all on its own: Def Leppardâs July 1987 Hysteria  album, one of the most popular albums ever at an estimated twenty-five million copies, yet as Joe Elliott and Rick Savage remind us, it is a miracle that it ever was finished. You canât make this stuff up. The epic saga revealed behind âPour Some Sugar on Meâ,âLove Bitesâ,âAnimalâ,âWomenâ,âArmageddon Itâ, and âHysteriaâ on the albumâs 30th anniversary. After World War II the worldwide success of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, Cream, and a bit later Led Zeppelin all had a profoundly positive effect on the British self-esteem. All of these predecessors of Def Leppard were almost entirely influenced musically by the blues, rhythm and blues, and soul music of African-Americans, yet it is most telling that when the Sheffield England quintet compiled an all-covers tribute album a few years ago made up of their most-loved formative impressions, all but one were by white British musicians….

Def Leppard Celebrate Thirty Years Of ‘Hysteria’
Def Leppard are in select company, alongside such acts as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles,  as one of the few rock bands to have multiple diamond record certifications, for 10 million albums sold. The British hard rock band scored back to back smashes in the â80s with 1983âs Pyromania and 1987âs Hysteria.
Ask frontman Joe Elliott and it is the latter that defined the bandâs first decade unquestionably. To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Hysteria, the band is releasing multiple deluxe editions of the set, including a five-CD box set.
I spoke with Elliott about the new edition of Hysteria, revisiting the album after three decades, why itâs endured as long as it has and why he doesnât offer advice to other artists after four decades in rock…..

âItâs hard to believe that itâs been thirty years since the release of Hysteria…â said frontman Joe Elliott, âIn some respects it really does seem like only yesterday. So, to mark this milestone, we wanted to do something very special for our fans and give them the definitive version of the album, one that incorporates all of the memories and milestones that we caught on tape and some of the madness that we got up to on the road. We hope it means as much to you as it does to us.â Added Phil Collen, âI look back at the whole Hysteria experience with excitement along with fond and tragic memories. It was our commercial zenith thanks to Mutt Lange’s insistence that we create an artistic hybrid between hard rock and pop top 40 music using every genre available as an inspiration. It was a rock album that would garner seven hit singles. Mission accomplished.â
Essential listening for fans across the board, Hysteria indisputably ranks as one of the most decorated and revered rock albums of all time. As the groupâs second consecutive RIAA Diamond-certified record (10 million sales in the U.S.), it would go on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide and 12 million albums sold in the U.S. alone. Moreover, the record staked a spot in the U.S. Top 40 for 96 weeks matched only by Born in the U.S.A. Rolling Stone touted it on the prestigious 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, and a poll in Q placed it among the 100 Greatest Albums of All Time. Dominating multiple charts, it captured No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and U.K. album charts, bolstered by immortal Top-5 anthems such as âPour Some Sugar On Me,â âAnimal,â âLove Bites,â âHysteria,â âRocketâ and âArmageddon It.â
Hysteria left an indelible mark on rock ânâ roll. Powered by stadium-filling drums, rapturous guitars, and unshakable choruses, the record saw Def Leppard rightfully claim their place among rockâs divinities forever. As a result, its influence now reverberates through three generations of artists to follow. It also historically marked their third straight collaboration with producer Robert John âMuttâ Lange. Among the new versions, the Super Deluxe Edition boasts 5-CD/2-DVDs including four booksâStory Of; a Ross Halfin photo book; Discography; Hysteria Tour Program and Tour Poster. The Deluxe Version features 3 CDs, the Standard Version is 1-CD, and the Vinyl Version is 2 Black LPs. In addition, there will be a limited-edition, 2-LP Colored Vinyl available via D2C channels for the first time.
